Rishikesh Event Row: Indians Allegedly Denied Entry, Foreigners Prioritized.

Rishikesh : A controversy has emerged at a spiritual event in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, after allegations surfaced that Indian citizens were denied entry while foreign attendees were prioritized. The incident, linked to the Rishikesh Kirtan Festival (scheduled from February 13 to March 22, 2026), gained widespread attention following a viral video showing a man questioning organizers at Ananda Ashram.Local attendees claimed that Indians were told the venue was at full capacity, yet foreign visitors were reportedly allowed to enter or register on the spot. One report mentions more than 20 foreign visitors exiting while Indian devotees were still refused entry.Organizers reportedly stated that the festival is open to everyone, but evening sessions prioritize international visitors to introduce them to Indian culture and spirituality, particularly those without prior exposure.

The incident sparked a massive outcry online, with critics labeling it as discrimination and cultural exclusion on home soil, while others defended the organizers’ right to manage a private event for specific educational purposes.

In early 2025, similar complaints were made about a kirtan session where locals felt sidelined in favor of “backpackers” who could afford the event.Rishikesh has seen other recent controversies, including a right-wing group disrupting a “Miss Rishikesh” pageant rehearsal in October 2025, claiming it violated local cultural values.

Conclusion-

As a major hub for international wellness retreats, Rishikesh often faces a delicate balance between catering to global tourists and maintaining inclusivity for local practitioners.
