In a swift and courageous operation, Pune Police successfully rescued a young woman who was attempting to jump from a steep cliff near the New Katraj Tunnel on Friday, March 20, 2026.
The incident came to light around 4:15 PM when the police control room received an urgent call about a woman standing dangerously close to the edge of a 200–250 feet high cliff along the Mumbai–Pune–Satara highway, near an Indian Oil petrol pump. The situation posed an immediate threat to her life.
A team from Ambegaon Police Station, led by Senior Police Inspector Sharad Zhine, rushed to the location without delay. Understanding the gravity of the situation, they also called in the fire brigade and an ambulance to ensure all emergency support was in place.
Instead of using force, the officers carefully approached the woman from the opposite side of the hill and began speaking to her. Through patient counseling and reassurance, they managed to gain her trust. After tense moments, the woman agreed to step back from the edge and was safely brought down.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the woman was under emotional distress due to family-related issues, which led her to take such a drastic step.
The coordinated efforts of alert citizens and the police team ensured that a major tragedy was averted. The woman was later shifted for medical attention and counseling.The incident highlights the importance of timely intervention, sensitivity in handling such situations, and the crucial role of emergency responders in saving lives.
