In a major relief for electricity consumers, power tariffs across Maharashtra have been reduced by 10% to 14%, effective from April 1, 2026. The landmark decision has been approved by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) and applies to consumers of major power distribution companies including MSEDCL (Mahavitaran), BEST, Adani Electricity, and Tata Power.
New Residential Tariff Slabs
As per the revised tariff structure for the financial year 2026–27, the updated electricity rates are:
- 0–100 Units: ₹4.30 per unit
- 101–300 Units: ₹7.10 per unit
- 301–500 Units: ₹11.64 per unit
- Above 500 Units: ₹12.64 per unit
Major Relief for Consumers
Officials estimate that nearly 70% of consumers in the state especially those using up to 100 units per month will benefit the most from this reduction. The move is expected to significantly lower monthly electricity bills for households.
The tariff cut is the first phase of a broader plan aimed at reducing electricity rates by a total of 26% over the next five years, up to 2030. Authorities have indicated that further reductions will be implemented gradually.
Additional Benefits Announced
- Smart Meter Users: Domestic consumers with smart meters will receive an extra concession of 85 paise per unit for electricity consumed during solar hours (9 AM to 5 PM).
- EV Charging: Charging electric vehicles at home will now cost approximately ₹9.25 to ₹9.50 per unit, making EV usage more affordable.
Push for Renewable Energy
The tariff reduction has been made possible due to improved operational efficiency and a growing shift towards low-cost renewable energy sources. Officials say this transition is helping reduce overall power generation costs.
Positive Impact Expected
The decision is being hailed as a consumer-friendly move, offering financial relief amid rising living costs. It also supports the state’s broader goals of promoting clean energy and sustainable consumption.Consumers across Maharashtra are expected to see the revised rates reflected in their upcoming electricity bills, bringing noticeable savings for households and small businesses alike.
