In a move aimed at improving safety and travel comfort for women commuters, the Indian Railways administration is planning to introduce a special “Pink Coach” in Mumbai’s suburban local train network.The proposal is currently under discussion between railway authorities and the Indian Railways as well as the Government of Maharashtra.
The primary objective of the Pink Coach initiative is to provide a safer and more comfortable travel environment for female passengers, particularly during peak hours when Mumbai local trains experience extreme overcrowding.Although dedicated ladies’ compartments already exist, many women commuters have reported safety concerns and severe crowding, especially during morning and evening rush hours.
According to the proposal, the special coaches may be introduced across all three major suburban lines in Mumbai:
- Central Railway
- Western Railway
- Harbour Line
The Pink Coach would be visually distinct and specifically reserved for women, making it easier for female commuters to identify and access the compartment quickly during crowded travel hours.
Mumbai’s suburban railway network in Mumbai is one of the busiest in the world, carrying millions of passengers daily. Authorities believe the Pink Coach initiative could help reduce overcrowding in existing ladies’ compartments and improve security for women travelers.As of March 15, 2026, the proposal is under active consideration, and discussions are ongoing between railway officials and the state government regarding its implementation, logistics, and deployment schedule.
If approved, the Pink Coach could become a significant step toward making Mumbai’s local train travel safer and more comfortable for women commuters.
