A dramatic rescue took place on Tuesday morning (March 10, 2026) when a young woman jumped into the creek from a moving local train on the Vashi Creek Bridge. Fortunately, alert local fishermen quickly rescued her and saved her life.According to preliminary information, the incident occurred around 8:30 AM when the woman, believed to be between 20 and 25 years old and a resident of Chembur, jumped from a moving train on the Mumbai Harbour Line while it was passing over the creek bridge.
Sources say the woman was under severe mental stress after reportedly being blocked by her boyfriend on phone and social media, which may have led to the extreme step.In a surprising turn of events, the woman survived the fall because the backpack she was carrying contained air, which helped her float on the water instead of sinking.This unexpected factor gave rescuers crucial time to reach her before the situation could turn fatal.
Local fishermen who were nearby noticed the incident and immediately rushed to help. Mahesh Sutar and his team are well known in the Vashi area for conducting rescue operations near the bridge. The group actively patrols the creek area and is often referred to locally as a “Suicide Prevention Squad”, as they have helped save several lives in similar situations.
After the rescue, the woman was handed over to the Vashi Police, who have begun investigating the incident. Authorities are also providing medical assistance and psychological counselling to help her recover from the trauma.Officials praised the swift response of the fishermen, whose timely action prevented what could have been a tragic incident.
