Maharashtra Eases Dry Day Restrictions – Full List and Reasons Inside.

Maharashtra : Reports that Maharashtra has cancelled dry days on Holi, Muharram, and Gandhi Jayanti are false. Maharashtra Excise Commissioner Rajesh Deshmukh officially dismissed these claims as “fake news” on February 24, 2026.

Official Clarification

The state government confirmed that the existing liquor policy remains unchanged. Maharashtra will continue to enforce the eight mandatory dry days stipulated under the Maharashtra Prohibition Act. These mandatory dry days include:

  • January 26: Republic Day
  • January 30: Martyrs’ Day
  • May 1: Maharashtra Day
  • Ashadhi Ekadashi
  • August 15: Independence Day
  • Anant Chaturdashi
  • October 2: Gandhi Jayanti
  • Kartiki Ekadashi

Additionally, district collectors retain the authority to declare further dry days within their jurisdictions as needed for law and order.

Origin of the False Information

The misinformation appears to have spread via social media posts and certain unverified news reports claiming a “major policy shift” aimed at curbing illegal alcohol trade. Authorities have urged the public to rely only on official government notifications and to avoid believing or sharing unverified social media updates.
