Dombivali : On March 1, 2026, alert citizens and a vigilant autorickshaw driver played a crucial role in foiling a chain-snatching incident near the Dombivli West railway station, highlighting the power of community action in curbing street crime.The incident occurred on Pandit Deendayal Road, a busy stretch near the railway station. A woman was walking along the road when a thief suddenly approached her and snatched her gold chain before fleeing the scene. Shocked by the sudden attack, the victim raised an alarm, prompting nearby pedestrians to take notice.In an attempt to evade capture, the thief ran into a building under construction on the same road. He reportedly hid among stacked bamboo poles and wooden materials, trying to avoid detection as local residents began searching the area.
The situation took a dramatic turn when an autorickshaw driver became suspicious of a passenger who had hastily boarded his vehicle. The driver realized that the man’s behavior matched that of someone involved in the crime and suspected he was the thief’s accomplice.Trusting his instincts, the driver alerted pedestrians nearby. Acting quickly, the driver and several citizens intercepted the autorickshaw before it could leave the area. The suspect was pulled out and questioned, during which it became clear that he had received the stolen chain from the main accused.
Although the primary thief managed to escape from the construction site after handing over the stolen gold chain to his accomplice, the latter was detained by the public. Citizens held him at the scene until police arrived shortly thereafter.The police took the accused into custody and began further investigations to trace the main suspect, who remains at large.
