Nagpur : A tragic accident on Sunday, March 1, 2026, a massive explosion at the SBL Energy Limited explosives factory in Nagpur district, Maharashtra, claimed the lives of at least 17 people and left 18 others critically injured.The blast occurred at the company’s facility in Raulgaon, Katol tehsil, approximately 25-35 km from Nagpur city.The explosion took place between 7:00 AM and 7:15 AM in the factory’s detonator packing unit (also referred to as the non-metallic crimping plant).Approximately 30 to 35 workers were present during the morning shift when the blast occurred. The intensity of the explosion was so severe that many bodies were charred beyond recognition, requiring DNA testing for identification.
While initial reports mentioned 15 deaths, the toll was later confirmed at 17 fatalities. Several of those killed were reportedly women.Teams from the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), SDRF (State Disaster Response Force), and local police conducted intensive rescue operations at the site.Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a thorough probe into the cause of the explosion. Specialized teams from PESO (Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation) and DISH (Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health) are also investigating.
Government authorities have announced the following compensation for the victims’ families and the injured: CM Devendra Fadnavis announced ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased.PM Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for each of the injured from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).SBL Energy Limited has also committed to providing additional financial help to the affected families.
