In a significant step towards improving sanitation and waste management, corporators from Badlapur recently visited advanced waste processing facilities in Indore a city widely regarded as India’s benchmark for cleanliness.
The visit aimed to study Indore’s successful “Waste to Wealth” model, which has transformed the city into a national leader in solid waste management. Key practices observed by the delegation included:
- 100% door-to-door garbage collection
- Strict segregation of wet and dry waste at the source
- Use of modern technology such as Bio-CNG plants and automated processing systems
Indore’s system ensures minimal landfill dependency while converting waste into useful resources like fuel and compost.
Back home, a major integrated solid waste management project has already been approved for Badlapur, Ambernath, and Ulhasnagar. The project, backed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority and the state government, is valued at ₹148 crore and aims to cater to a population of over 12.5 lakh.Officials say this cluster model could become a pilot project for smaller municipal councils across Maharashtra.
During the visit, corporators explored several cutting-edge facilities, including:
- A Public-Private Partnership (PPP)-based green waste processing plant
- The “Gobar-Dhan” Bio-CNG plant, which converts wet waste into fuel for city buses
- Scientific waste treatment units ensuring minimal environmental impact
These initiatives have helped Indore maintain top rankings in cleanliness surveys and serve as a model for urban sustainability.
The Kulgaon Badlapur Municipal Council (KBMC) aims to replicate similar systems to eliminate dumping grounds and promote scientific waste disposal.Authorities believe that adopting such practices will not only improve cleanliness but also reduce pollution and generate resources from waste.
The visit to Indore marks a proactive move by Badlapur’s leadership to modernize its waste management system. With a major project already approved and lessons from India’s cleanest city in hand, residents now hope to see tangible changes that will make Badlapur cleaner, greener, and more sustainable in the near future.
