A controversy has erupted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2 following an argument between a passenger and airport staff over a fine and language, reigniting debate on public service conduct in Maharashtra.
According to reports, the incident took place at Terminal 2 when a passenger was fined ₹250 for allegedly taking a wrong turn within the airport premises. The situation escalated when the passenger sought clarification or assistance regarding the penalty.Instead of resolving the matter calmly, a heated argument reportedly broke out between the passenger and a Hindi-speaking security guard, along with his supervisor.
During the altercation, the staff allegedly made controversial remarks, stating that “Hindi is the mother tongue,” which did not go down well with the passenger. The situation further intensified when the staff reportedly issued a warning, saying they would call the police and have the vehicle locked. These statements have triggered strong reactions, especially in the context of language sensitivity in the state.
The incident has once again brought attention to the ongoing debate around language use in public service roles in Mumbai. Citizens have questioned whether staff at major public facilities should be more sensitive and accommodating towards local languages, including Marathi. At the same time, concerns have also been raised about the behavior of officials and the need for better communication and conflict resolution with passengers.
Following the incident, there have been demands for an inquiry into the conduct of the staff involved. Many have urged airport authorities to ensure that personnel are trained to handle such situations professionally without escalating tensions.
The dispute at Mumbai Airport’s Terminal 2 highlights not just a disagreement over a fine, but broader issues of language sensitivity and public service behavior. As the debate grows, authorities may face increasing pressure to address both communication practices and staff accountability at one of India’s busiest airports.
