A recent anti-encroachment drive by the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation in Ulhasnagar has sparked criticism and confusion among citizens, after authorities imposed fines on handcart vendors but allegedly failed to remove them from the spot.
The drive was carried out on Friday evening near the busy Gol Maidan Ulhasnagar area, which falls under Ward Committee One. Municipal officials targeted increasing encroachments on roads and footpaths, particularly focusing on handcart vendors operating in the vicinity. While fines were reportedly imposed on several vendors as part of the enforcement action, locals claim that not a single handcart was actually removed.
This has led to growing resentment among residents, who question the intent behind the drive. According to locals, authorities appear to be collecting fines under the guise of enforcement while simultaneously allowing vendors to continue operating at the same locations.“Is this really an eviction drive or just a system to collect fines?” questioned one resident, echoing the sentiment of many in the area.
Gol Maidan is one of the busiest zones in Ulhasnagar, and the presence of handcarts, combined with roadside parking, has significantly narrowed available road space. This has resulted in frequent traffic congestion and increased the risk of accidents.Residents say that the situation is worsening day by day, making it difficult for pedestrians and motorists alike to navigate the area safely.
Citizens are now demanding clarity and consistency from the municipal administration. They argue that if encroachments are illegal, then strict removal action should be taken. On the other hand, if vendors are to be allowed, then a proper system should be implemented instead of repeated fine collection.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the functioning and accountability of civic authorities. With public frustration growing, all eyes are now on the administration to see whether it will take concrete steps to resolve the issue or continue with what many are calling a “fine-collection drive” rather than genuine enforcement.
The Ulhasnagar encroachment drive has highlighted a deeper issue of inconsistent civic action. As citizens struggle with daily inconvenience and safety risks, the need for a clear and effective policy has become more urgent than ever.
