The lifeline of the city, the Mumbai Suburban Railway, is once again under scrutiny due to rising incidents of gate blocking and passenger bullying. This troubling behavior often seen during peak hours poses serious safety risks and is a punishable offense under the law.
Commuters frequently report situations where certain groups attempt to “reserve” seats for friends or deliberately block train doors. This prevents passengers from boarding or alighting, especially at intermediate stations. Such incidents are commonly reported on long-distance and heavily crowded routes like Virar and Dahanu-bound trains. In many cases, these groups create an intimidating environment, discouraging others from entering coaches or forcing passengers to dangerously hang near the doors.
Legal Provisions
Authorities have clarified that such behavior is illegal and can attract strict action under the Railways Act. Offenders may be booked under:
- Section 145: For creating nuisance or engaging in unruly behavior
- Section 155: For obstructing entry into unreserved compartments
- Section 156: For unsafe travel practices, including standing on footboards
The Indian Railways has repeatedly warned that strict penalties, including fines and possible imprisonment, can be imposed on violators.
Gate blocking and bullying significantly worsen overcrowding and create dangerous travel conditions. Passengers forced to stand at the edge of doors are at high risk of falling from moving trains—a scenario that has led to multiple tragic incidents over the years.Railway officials emphasize that even a moment of imbalance in overcrowded conditions can turn fatal, making such reckless behavior a serious public safety issue.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police have urged commuters to avoid such practices and report any incidents of bullying or obstruction.Passengers are encouraged to cooperate, follow boarding rules, and respect fellow commuters’ rights to ensure safer travel for everyone.
As Mumbai continues to depend heavily on its suburban rail network, tackling such issues through awareness, enforcement, and responsible behavior remains critical to preventing avoidable accidents and ensuring a smoother daily commute.
