MNS Workers Blacken Gujarati Signboard of Food Stall in Mira Road Over Language Row.

A language-related controversy erupted in the Mira Road area near Mumbai on March 14, 2026, after workers from Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) blackened the signboard of a food stall for allegedly not displaying its name in Marathi. The incident took place in the Amar Palace area of Mira Road, where a food stall named Surti Ghotala had reportedly displayed its signboard entirely in Gujarati.

MNS members claimed that the signboard violated Maharashtra’s rules that require commercial establishments to display their names in the Marathi language using the Devanagari script.

According to reports, the action was led by MNS city president Sandeep Rane along with party workers. The group allegedly blackened the Gujarati nameplate of the stall after accusing the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation of failing to act on their earlier complaint.MNS workers demanded that the shop owner install a signboard in Marathi, stating that businesses operating in Maharashtra must follow state regulations regarding language display.

Under Maharashtra law, all shops and establishments are required to display their nameboards in Marathi, and the Marathi text must not be smaller than any other language used on the same signboard.

The incident is part of a broader campaign by the MNS across several regions of the state, including Thane and areas along the Mumbai–Ahmedabad highway, where the party has been pushing businesses to follow Marathi signage rules.

The action has once again sparked debate over language identity and enforcement of signage laws in Maharashtra, with supporters arguing that it protects the state’s linguistic culture, while critics say such actions can create tension.Authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the incident, but the issue has quickly gained attention on social media and in local communities.
