LPG Shortage Triggers Black Marketing Crisis in Maharashtra Ulhasnagar Thane Areas Hit Hard.

A severe shortage of LPG cylinders has triggered a black marketing crisis across Maharashtra in March 2026, with areas like Ulhasnagar and Thane witnessing major disruptions in cooking gas supply.

According to reports, the shortage has been largely attributed to international tensions affecting energy supply routes in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz. These disruptions have reportedly impacted LPG imports and distribution, creating supply shortages in several parts of the state. With supply shrinking, black marketing of LPG cylinders has surged across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. In Thane and surrounding suburbs, commercial LPG cylinders officially priced around ₹1,800 are reportedly being sold illegally for ₹4,000 to ₹10,000.

Local residents and small businesses say they are struggling to secure cylinders at normal prices, forcing many to either pay inflated rates or temporarily shut operations. In response to the crisis, authorities have begun conducting raids against illegal hoarding and black marketing. In a recent operation in Ambernath, officials seized 341 LPG cylinders worth approximately ₹7.86 lakh that were allegedly being stocked and sold illegally.

Officials say strict action will be taken against individuals and agencies involved in hoarding essential commodities. The shortage has severely impacted the hospitality sector. Industry sources claim that nearly 80% of hotels and bars in Thane were at risk of shutting down due to the lack of affordable commercial LPG cylinders required for daily operations.

Restaurant owners say the soaring prices in the black market have made it impossible for many small establishments to continue operating normally. Some local reports also mention incidents involving smaller gas distributors or storage points allegedly hoarding cylinders. While specific cases involving local names are still being verified, authorities say they are monitoring the situation closely.

Residents in Ulhasnagar and nearby areas have urged officials to increase supply and take strict action against black marketers to stabilize the situation. As the crisis continues, people across the region are hoping for quick intervention by authorities to restore normal LPG supply and prevent exploitation of consumers.
