Ulhasnagar Demolition Drive in Ekta Nagar Sparks Protests, Police Lathi Charge Reported.

Ulhasnagar witnessed tension on March 7, 2026, after a demolition drive carried out by the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) in Ekta Nagar, Camp 5 (Kailash Colony) triggered protests from local residents. The action was undertaken to clear land for the proposed Ambernath Shiv Mandir Corridor beautification project, estimated to cost around ₹150 crore.

According to officials, the demolition was conducted by UMC’s Anti-Unauthorized Construction Squad under the supervision of squad head Ganesh Shimpi and Assistant Commissioner Alka Pawar. The operation targeted alleged unauthorized structures built in the Ekta Nagar area to make way for the planned corridor and beautification work around the Shiv Mandir Ambernath.Officials stated that the drive was part of a broader effort to develop and beautify the temple surroundings and improve infrastructure in the region.

The demolition sparked anger among residents, many of whom claimed they had been living in the area for 30 to 40 years. Several families alleged that they were not given proper notice or rehabilitation arrangements before the structures were demolished. In protest, locals staged a “rasta roko” (road blockade), demanding immediate intervention from authorities and rehabilitation for displaced families. The protest quickly intensified as a large crowd gathered at the site.

Police were deployed to control the situation after the protest reportedly turned tense. According to sources, some protesters allegedly began stone-pelting, following which police carried out a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and restore order in the area.During the chaos, several residents claimed they were injured. One of the most concerning allegations came from a two-month pregnant woman, who said she was struck by a stone during the incident.

Reports suggest that at least 31 houses were targeted during the demolition drive. The action left hundreds of residents temporarily homeless, forcing many families to remain on the streets with their belongings.Residents say the sudden eviction has caused severe hardship, especially for elderly people, women, and children.

As of March 8, 2026, displaced residents have begun a hunger strike demanding proper rehabilitation, alternative housing, and compensation. They have also appealed to local political leaders, including Shrikant Shinde, to intervene and address their concerns. The situation in Ekta Nagar remains sensitive, with residents continuing their protest while awaiting a response from authorities regarding rehabilitation measures.
