₹500 for 5 Minutes? Varanasi Auto Fare Row Goes Viral.

Varanasi : A viral video from Varanasi depicting an alleged overcharging scam involving an auto-driver and a foreign tourist.According to the viral reports and social media content.An auto-driver reportedly demanded ₹500 for just 5 minutes of sitting in the auto and ₹1000 for 10 minutes.The foreign guest is seen attempting to pay a more reasonable amount of ₹100, while the driver continuously insists on the much higher, exorbitant rate.The video sparked outrage on social media, with it netizens questioning the treatment of tourists and citing it as a violation of the Indian spirit of “Atithi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God). Such incidents are viewed as damaging to India’s international reputation.While the specific overcharging incident in the image has been trending, other similar reports involving tourists and transport in India have also surfaced recently:Delhi Incident (Feb 2026): A video by a foreign tourist (@daviddxiao) went viral where a Delhi auto-driver allegedly offered illegal sexual services and quoted varying rates, leading to demands for police action.Varanasi UPI Scam (Feb 2026): A separate viral case in Varanasi involved an auto-driver nearly being defrauded of ₹20,000 after a passenger convinced him to make a digital transfer in exchange for promised cash that she then refused to pay.
